1 자주 責望(책망)을 받으면서도 목이 곧은 사람은 갑자기 敗亡(패망)을 當(당)하고 避(피)하지 못하리라

A man who remains stiff-necked after many rebukes will suddenly be destroyed--without remedy.

He, that being often reproved hardeneth his neck, shall suddenly be destroyed, and that without remedy.

2 義人(의인)이 많아지면 百姓(백성)이 즐거워하고 惡人(악인)이 權勢(권세)를 잡으면 百姓(백성)이 歎息(탄식)하느니라

When the righteous thrive, the people rejoice; when the wicked rule, the people groan.

When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice: but when the wicked beareth rule, the people mourn.

3 智慧(지혜)를 思慕(사모)하는 者(자)는 아비를 즐겁게 하여도 娼妓(창기)를 사귀는 者(자)는 財物(재물)을 없이 하느니라

A man who loves wisdom brings joy to his father, but a companion of prostitutes squanders his wealth.

Whoso loveth wisdom rejoiceth his father: but he that keepeth company with harlots spendeth his substance.

4 王(왕)은 公義(공의)나라를 堅固(견고)케 하나 賂物(뇌물)을 抑止(억지)로 내게 하는 者(자)는 나라를 滅亡(멸망)시키느니라

By justice a king gives a country stability, but one who is greedy for bribes tears it down.

The king by judgment establisheth the land: but he that receiveth gifts overthroweth it.

5 이웃에게 阿諂(아첨)하는 것은 그의 발 앞에 그물을 치는 것이니라

Whoever flatters his neighbor is spreading a net for his feet.

A man that flattereth his neighbour spreadeth a net for his feet.

6 惡人(악인)의 犯罪(범죄)하는 것은 스스로 올무가 되게 하는 것이나 義人(의인)은 노래하고 기뻐하느니라

An evil man is snared by his own sin, but a righteous one can sing and be glad.

In the transgression of an evil man there is a snare: but the righteous doth sing and rejoice.

7 義人(의인)은 가난한 者(자)의 事情(사정)을 알아 주나 惡人(악인)은 알아 줄 知識(지식)이 없느니라

The righteous care about justice for the poor, but the wicked have no such concern.

The righteous considereth the cause of the poor: but the wicked regardeth not to know it.

8 侮慢(모만)한 者(자)는 城邑(성읍)을 擾亂(요란)케 하여도 슬기로운 者(자)는 怒(노)를 그치게 하느니라

Mockers stir up a city, but wise men turn away anger.

Scornful men bring a city into a snare: but wise men turn away wrath.

9 智慧(지혜)로운 者(자)와 미련한 者(자)가 다투면 智慧(지혜)로운 者(자)가 怒(노)하든지 웃든지 그 다툼이 그침이 없느니라
전4:6

If a wise man goes to court with a fool, the fool rages and scoffs, and there is no peace.

If a wise man contendeth with a foolish man, whether he rage or laugh, there is no rest.

10 피 흘리기를 좋아하는 者(자)는 穩全(온전)한 者(자)를 미워하고 正直(정직)한 者(자)의 生命(생명)을 찾느니라

Bloodthirsty men hate a man of integrity and seek to kill the upright.

The bloodthirsty hate the upright: but the just seek his soul.

11 어리석은 者(자)는 그 怒(노)를 다 드러내어도 智慧(지혜)로운 者(자)는 그 怒(노)를 抑制(억제)하느니라

A fool gives full vent to his anger, but a wise man keeps himself under control.

A fool uttereth all his mind: but a wise man keepeth it in till afterwards.

12 官員(관원)이 거짓말을 申請(신청)하면 그 下人(하인)은 다 惡(악)하니라

If a ruler listens to lies, all his officials become wicked.

If a ruler hearken to lies, all his servants are wicked.

13 가난한 者(자)와 暴虐(포학)한 者(자)1)섞여 살거니와 여호와께서는 그들의 눈에 빛을 주시느니라
잠22:2 시13:3 욥25:3     1) 히, 서로 만나거니와

The poor man and the oppressor have this in common: The LORD gives sight to the eyes of both.

The poor and the deceitful man meet together: the LORD lighteneth both their eyes.

14 王(왕)이 가난한 者(자)를 誠實(성실)히 伸寃(신원)하면 그 位(위)永遠(영원)히 堅固(견고)하리라

If a king judges the poor with fairness, his throne will always be secure.

The king that faithfully judgeth the poor, his throne shall be established for ever.

15 채찍과 꾸지람이 智慧(지혜)를 주거늘 任意(임의)로 하게 버려두면 그 子息(자식)은 어미를 辱(욕)되게 하느니라

The rod of correction imparts wisdom, but a child left to himself disgraces his mother.

The rod and reproof give wisdom: but a child left to himself bringeth his mother to shame.

16 惡人(악인)이 많아지면 罪(죄)도 많아지나니 義人(의인)은 그들의 亡(망)함을 보리라

When the wicked thrive, so does sin, but the righteous will see their downfall.

When the wicked are multiplied, transgression increaseth: but the righteous shall see their fall.

17 네 子息(자식)을 懲戒(징계)하라 그리하면 그가 너를 平安(평안)하게 하겠고 또 네 마음에 기쁨을 주리라

Discipline your son, and he will give you peace; he will bring delight to your soul.

Correct thy son, and he shall give thee rest; yea, he shall give delight unto thy soul.

18 默示(묵시)가 없으면 百姓(백성)이 放恣(방자)히 行(행)하거니와 律法(율법)을 지키는 者(자)는 福(복)이 있느니라

Where there is no revelation, the people cast off restraint; but blessed is he who keeps the law.

Where there is no vision, the people perish: but he that keepeth the law, happy is he.

19 종은 말로만 하면 고치지 아니하나니 이는 그가 알고도 聽從(청종)치 아니함이니라

A servant cannot be corrected by mere words; though he understands, he will not respond.

A servant will not be corrected by words: for though he understand he will not answer.

20 네가 言語(언어)에 躁急(조급)한 사람을 보느냐 그보다 미련한 者(자)에게 오히려 바랄 것이 있느니라

Do you see a man who speaks in haste? There is more hope for a fool than for him.

Seest thou a man that is hasty in his words? there is more hope of a fool than of him.

21 종을 어렸을 때부터 곱게 養育(양육)하면 그가 나중에는 子息(자식)인 체하리라

If a man pampers his servant from youth, he will bring grief in the end.

He that delicately bringeth up his servant from a child shall have him become his son at the length.

22 怒(노)하는 者(자)는 다툼을 일으키고 忿(분)하여 하는 者(자)는 犯罪(범죄)함이 많으니라

An angry man stirs up dissension, and a hot-tempered one commits many sins.

An angry man stirreth up strife, and a furious man aboundeth in transgression.

23 사람이 驕慢(교만)하면 낮아지게 되겠고 마음이 謙遜(겸손)하면 榮譽(영예)를 얻으리라

A man's pride brings him low, but a man of lowly spirit gains honor.

A man's pride shall bring him low: but honour shall uphold the humble in spirit.

24 盜賊(도적)과 짝하는 者(자)는 自己(자기)의 靈魂(영혼)을 미워하는 者(자)라 그는 盟誓(맹세)함을 들어도 直告(직고)하지 아니하느니라

The accomplice of a thief is his own enemy; he is put under oath and dare not testify.

Whoso is partner with a thief hateth his own soul: he heareth cursing, and bewrayeth it not.

25 사람을 두려워하면 올무에 걸리게 되거니와 여호와를 依支(의지)하는 者(자)는 安全(안전)하리라

Fear of man will prove to be a snare, but whoever trusts in the LORD is kept safe.

The fear of man bringeth a snare: but whoso putteth his trust in the LORD shall be safe.

26 主權者(주권자)에게 恩惠(은혜)를 求(구)하는 者(자)가 많으나 사람의 일의 作定(작정)은 여호와께로 말미암느니라

Many seek an audience with a ruler, but it is from the LORD that man gets justice.

Many seek the ruler's favour; but every man's judgment cometh from the LORD.

27 不義(불의)한 者(자)는 義人(의인)에게 미움을 받고 正直(정직)한 者(자)는 惡人(악인)에게 미움을 받느니라

The righteous detest the dishonest; the wicked detest the upright.

An unjust man is an abomination to the just: and he that is upright in the way is abomination to the wicked.
