1 王(왕)의 마음이 여호와의 손에 있음이 마치 洑(보)의 물과 같아서 그가 任意(임의)로 引導(인도)하시느니라

The king's heart is in the hand of the LORD; he directs it like a watercourse wherever he pleases.

The king's heart is in the hand of the LORD, as the rivers of water: he turneth it whithersoever he will.

2 사람의 行爲(행위)가 自己(자기) 보기에는 모두 正直(정직)하여도 여호와는 心靈(심령)을 監察(감찰)하시느니라

All a man's ways seem right to him, but the LORD weighs the heart.

Every way of a man is right in his own eyes: but the LORD pondereth the hearts.

3 義(의)와 公平(공평)을 行(행)하는 것은 祭祀(제사) 드리는 것보다 여호와께서 기쁘게 여기시느니라

To do what is right and just is more acceptable to the LORD than sacrifice.

To do justice and judgment is more acceptable to the LORD than sacrifice.

4 눈이 높은 것과 마음이 驕慢(교만)한 것과 惡人(악인)의 1)亨通(형통)한 것은 다 罪(죄)니라

Haughty eyes and a proud heart, the lamp of the wicked, are sin!

An high look, and a proud heart, and the plowing of the wicked, is sin.

5 부지런한 者(자)의 經營(경영)은 豊富(풍부)함에 이를 것이나 躁急(조급)한 者(자)는 窮乏(궁핍)함에 이를 따름이니라

The plans of the diligent lead to profit as surely as haste leads to poverty.

The thoughts of the diligent tend only to plenteousness; but of every one that is hasty only to want.

6 속이는 말로 財物(재물)을 모으는 것은 죽음을 求(구)하는 것이라 곧 불려 다니는 안개니라

A fortune made by a lying tongue is a fleeting vapor and a deadly snare.

The getting of treasures by a lying tongue is a vanity tossed to and fro of them that seek death.

7 惡人(악인)의 强暴(강포)自己(자기)를 消滅(소멸)하나니 이는 公義(공의) 行(행)하기를 싫어함이니라

The violence of the wicked will drag them away, for they refuse to do what is right.

The robbery of the wicked shall destroy them; because they refuse to do judgment.

8 罪(죄)를 크게 犯(범)한 者(자)의 길은 甚(심)히 구부러지고 깨끗한 者(자)의 길은 곧으니라

The way of the guilty is devious, but the conduct of the innocent is upright.

The way of man is froward and strange: but as for the pure, his work is right.

9 다투는 女人(여인)과 함께 큰 집에서 나는 것보다 2)움막에서 혼자 사는 것이 나으니라

Better to live on a corner of the roof than share a house with a quarrelsome wife.

It is better to dwell in a corner of the housetop, than with a brawling woman in a wide house.

10 惡人(악인)의 마음은 남의 災殃(재앙)을 願(원)하나니 그 이웃도 그 앞에서 恩惠(은혜)를 입지 못하느니라

The wicked man craves evil; his neighbor gets no mercy from him.

The soul of the wicked desireth evil: his neighbour findeth no favour in his eyes.

11 倨慢(거만)한 者(자)가 罰(벌)을 받으면 어리석은 者(자)는 警醒(경성)하겠고 智慧(지혜)로운 者(자)가 敎訓(교훈)을 받으면 知識(지식)이 더 하리라

When a mocker is punished, the simple gain wisdom; when a wise man is instructed, he gets knowledge.

When the scorner is punished, the simple is made wise: and when the wise is instructed, he receiveth knowledge.

12 3)義(의)로우신 者(자)는 惡人(악인)의 집을 監察(감찰)하시고 惡人(악인)을 患難(환난)에 던지시느니라
시37:35,36     3) 의로운 자는 악인의 집을 헤아려서 악인의 망할 것을 아느니라

The Righteous One takes note of the house of the wicked and brings the wicked to ruin.

The righteous man wisely considereth the house of the wicked: but God overthroweth the wicked for their wickedness.

13 귀를 막아 가난한 者(자)의 부르짖는 소리를 듣지 아니하면 自己(자기)의 부르짖을 때에도 들을 者(자)가 없으리라

If a man shuts his ears to the cry of the poor, he too will cry out and not be answered.

Whoso stoppeth his ears at the cry of the poor, he also shall cry himself, but shall not be heard.

14 隱密(은밀)한 膳物(선물)은 怒(노)를 쉬게 하고 품의 賂物(뇌물)은 猛烈(맹렬)한 忿(분)을 그치게 하느니라

A gift given in secret soothes anger, and a bribe concealed in the cloak pacifies great wrath.

A gift in secret pacifieth anger: and a reward in the bosom strong wrath.

15 公義(공의)를 行(행)하는 것이 義人(의인)에게는 즐거움이요 罪人(죄인)에게는 敗亡(패망)이니라

When justice is done, it brings joy to the righteous but terror to evildoers.

It is joy to the just to do judgment: but destruction shall be to the workers of iniquity.

16 明哲(명철)의 길을 떠난 사람은 死亡(사망)의 會衆(회중)에 居(거)하리라

A man who strays from the path of understanding comes to rest in the company of the dead.

The man that wandereth out of the way of understanding shall remain in the congregation of the dead.

17 宴樂(연락)을 좋아하는 者(자)는 가난하게 되고 술과 기름을 좋아하는 者(자)는 富(부)하게 되지 못하느니라

He who loves pleasure will become poor; whoever loves wine and oil will never be rich.

He that loveth pleasure shall be a poor man: he that loveth wine and oil shall not be rich.

18 惡人(악인)은 義人(의인)의 代贖(대속)이 되고 詭詐(궤사)한 者(자)는 正直(정직)한 者(자)의 代身(대신)이 되느니라

The wicked become a ransom for the righteous, and the unfaithful for the upright.

The wicked shall be a ransom for the righteous, and the transgressor for the upright.

19 다투며 성내는 女人(여인)과 함께 사는 것보다 曠野(광야)에서 혼자 사는 것이 나으니라

Better to live in a desert than with a quarrelsome and ill-tempered wife.

It is better to dwell in the wilderness, than with a contentious and an angry woman.

20 智慧(지혜)있는 者(자)의 집에는 貴(귀)한 보배와 기름이 있으나 미련한 者(자)는 이것을 다 삼켜버리느니라

In the house of the wise are stores of choice food and oil, but a foolish man devours all he has.

There is treasure to be desired and oil in the dwelling of the wise; but a foolish man spendeth it up.

21 義(의)와 人子(인자)를 따라 求(구)하는 者(자)는 生命(생명)과 義(의)와 榮光(영광)을 얻느니라

He who pursues righteousness and love finds life, prosperity and honor.

He that followeth after righteousness and mercy findeth life, righteousness, and honour.

22 智慧(지혜)로운 者(자)는 勇士(용사)의 城(성)에 올라가서 그 城(성)의 堅固(견고)히 依賴(의뢰)하는 것을 破(파)하느니라

A wise man attacks the city of the mighty and pulls down the stronghold in which they trust.

A wise man scaleth the city of the mighty, and casteth down the strength of the confidence thereof.

23 입과 혀를 지키는 者(자)는 그 靈魂(영혼)을 患難(환난)에서 保全(보전)하느니라

He who guards his mouth and his tongue keeps himself from calamity.

Whoso keepeth his mouth and his tongue keepeth his soul from troubles.

24 無禮(무례)하고 驕慢(교만)한 者(자)를 이름하여 妄靈(망령)된 者(자)라 하나니 이는 넘치는 驕慢(교만)으로 行(행)함이니라

The proud and arrogant man--"Mocker" is his name; he behaves with overweening pride.

Proud and haughty scorner is his name, who dealeth in proud wrath.

25 게으른 者(자)의 情欲(정욕)이 그를 죽이나니 이는 그 손으로 일하기를 싫어함이니라

The sluggard's craving will be the death of him, because his hands refuse to work.

The desire of the slothful killeth him; for his hands refuse to labour.

26 어떤 者(자)는 終日(종일)토록 貪(탐)하기만 하나 義人(의인)은 아끼지 아니하고 施濟(시제)하느니라

All day long he craves for more, but the righteous give without sparing.

He coveteth greedily all the day long: but the righteous giveth and spareth not.

27 惡人(악인)의 祭物(제물)은 本來(본래) 可憎(가증)하거든 하물며 惡(악)한 뜻으로 드리는 것이랴

The sacrifice of the wicked is detestable--how much more so when brought with evil intent!

The sacrifice of the wicked is abomination: how much more, when he bringeth it with a wicked mind?

28 거짓 證人(증인)은 敗亡(패망)하려니와 確實(확실)한 證人(증인)의 말은 힘이 있느니라

A false witness will perish, and whoever listens to him will be destroyed forever.

A false witness shall perish: but the man that heareth speaketh constantly.

29 惡人(악인)은 그 얼굴을 굳게 하나 正直(정직)한 者(자)는 그 行爲(행위)를 삼가느니라

A wicked man puts up a bold front, but an upright man gives thought to his ways.

A wicked man hardeneth his face: but as for the upright, he directeth his way.

30 智慧(지혜)로도 明哲(명철)로도 謀略(모략)으로도 여호와를 當(당)치 못하느니라

There is no wisdom, no insight, no plan that can succeed against the LORD.

There is no wisdom nor understanding nor counsel against the LORD.

31 싸울 날을 爲(위)하여 馬兵(마병)을 豫備(예비)하거니와 이김은 여호와께 있느니라

The horse is made ready for the day of battle, but victory rests with the LORD.

The horse is prepared against the day of battle: but safety is of the LORD.
