1 誠實(성실)히 行(행)하는 가난한 者(자)는 입술이 悖戾(패려)하고 미련한 者(자) 보다 나으니라

Better a poor man whose walk is blameless than a fool whose lips are perverse.

Better is the poor that walketh in his integrity, than he that is perverse in his lips, and is a fool.

2 知識(지식) 없는 所願(소원)은 善(선)치 못하고 발이 急(급)한 사람은 그릇하느니라

It is not good to have zeal without knowledge, nor to be hasty and miss the way.

Also, that the soul be without knowledge, it is not good; and he that hasteth with his feet sinneth.

3 사람이 미련하므로 自己(자기) 길을 굽게 하고 마음으로 여호와를 怨望(원망)하느니라

A man's own folly ruins his life, yet his heart rages against the LORD.

The foolishness of man perverteth his way: and his heart fretteth against the LORD.

4 財物(재물)은 많은 親舊(친구)를 더하게 하나 가난한즉 親舊(친구)가 끊어지느니라

Wealth brings many friends, but a poor man's friend deserts him.

Wealth maketh many friends; but the poor is separated from his neighbour.

5 거짓 證人(증인)은 罰(벌)을 免(면)치 못할 것이요 거짓말을 내는 者(자)도 避(피)치 못하리라

A false witness will not go unpunished, and he who pours out lies will not go free.

A false witness shall not be unpunished, and he that speaketh lies shall not escape.

6 너그러운 사람에게는 恩惠(은혜)를 求(구)하는 者(자)가 많고 膳物(선물)을 주기를 좋아하는 者(자)에게는 사람마다 親舊(친구)가 되느니라

Many curry favor with a ruler, and everyone is the friend of a man who gives gifts.

Many will intreat the favour of the prince: and every man is a friend to him that giveth gifts.

7 가난한 者(자)는 그 兄弟(형제)들에게도 미움을 받거든 하물며 親舊(친구)야 그를 멀리 아니하겠느냐 따라가며 말하려 할찌라도 그들이 없어졌으리라

A poor man is shunned by all his relatives--how much more do his friends avoid him! Though he pursues them with pleading, they are nowhere to be found.

All the brethren of the poor do hate him: how much more do his friends go far from him? he pursueth them with words, yet they are wanting to him.

8 智慧(지혜)를 얻는 者(자)는 自己(자기) 靈魂(영혼)을 사랑하고 明哲(명철)을 지키는 者(자)는 福(복)을 얻느니라

He who gets wisdom loves his own soul; he who cherishes understanding prospers.

He that getteth wisdom loveth his own soul: he that keepeth understanding shall find good.

9 거짓 證人(증인)은 罰(벌)을 免(면)치 못할 것이요 거짓말을 내는 者(자)는 亡(망)할 것이니라

A false witness will not go unpunished, and he who pours out lies will perish.

A false witness shall not be unpunished, and he that speaketh lies shall perish.

10 미련한 者(자)가 奢侈(사치)하는 것이 適當(적당)치 못하거든 하물며 종이 方伯(방백)을 다스림이랴

It is not fitting for a fool to live in luxury--how much worse for a slave to rule over princes!

Delight is not seemly for a fool; much less for a servant to have rule over princes.

11 怒(노)하기를 더디하는 것이 사람의 슬기요 허물을 容恕(용서)하는 것이 自己(자기)의 榮光(영광)이니라

A man's wisdom gives him patience; it is to his glory to overlook an offense.

The discretion of a man deferreth his anger; and it is his glory to pass over a transgression.

12 王(왕)의 怒(노)함은 獅子(사자)의 부르짖음 같고 그의 恩澤(은택)은 풀 위에 이슬 같으니라

A king's rage is like the roar of a lion, but his favor is like dew on the grass.

The king's wrath is as the roaring of a lion; but his favour is as dew upon the grass.

13 미련한 아들은 그 아비의 災殃(재앙)이요 다투는 아내는 이어 떨어지는 물방울이니라

A foolish son is his father's ruin, and a quarrelsome wife is like a constant dripping.

A foolish son is the calamity of his father: and the contentions of a wife are a continual dropping.

14 집과 財物(재물)은 祖上(조상)에게서 相續(상속)하거니와 슬기로운 아내는 여호와께로서 말미암느니라

Houses and wealth are inherited from parents, but a prudent wife is from the LORD.

House and riches are the inheritance of fathers: and a prudent wife is from the LORD.

15 게으름이 사람으로 깊이 잠들게 하나니 懈怠(해태)한 사람은 주릴 것이니라

Laziness brings on deep sleep, and the shiftless man goes hungry.

Slothfulness casteth into a deep sleep; and an idle soul shall suffer hunger.

16 誡命(계명)을 지키는 者(자)는 自己(자기)의 靈魂(영혼)을 지키거니와 그 行實(행실)을 삼가지 아니하는 者(자)는 죽으리라

He who obeys instructions guards his life, but he who is contemptuous of his ways will die.

He that keepeth the commandment keepeth his own soul; but he that despiseth his ways shall die.

17 가난한 者(자)를 불쌍히 여기는 것은 여호와께 꾸이는 것이니 그 善行(선행)을 갚아 주시리라

He who is kind to the poor lends to the LORD, and he will reward him for what he has done.

He that hath pity upon the poor lendeth unto the LORD; and that which he hath given will he pay him again.

18 네가 네 아들에게 所望(소망)이 있은즉 그를 懲戒(징계)하고 죽일 마음은 두지 말찌니라

Discipline your son, for in that there is hope; do not be a willing party to his death.

Chasten thy son while there is hope, and let not thy soul spare for his crying.

19 怒(노)하기를 猛烈(맹렬)히 하는 者(자)는 罰(벌)을 받을 것이라 네가 그를 건져 주면 다시 건져 주게 되리라

A hot-tempered man must pay the penalty; if you rescue him, you will have to do it again.

A man of great wrath shall suffer punishment: for if thou deliver him, yet thou must do it again.

20 너는 勸告(권고)를 들으며 訓戒(훈계)를 받으라 그리하면 네가 畢竟(필경)智慧(지혜)롭게 되리라

Listen to advice and accept instruction, and in the end you will be wise.

Hear counsel, and receive instruction, that thou mayest be wise in thy latter end.

21 사람의 마음에는 많은 計劃(계획)이 있어도 오직 여호와의 뜻이 完全(완전)히 서리라

Many are the plans in a man's heart, but it is the LORD'S purpose that prevails.

There are many devices in a man's heart; nevertheless the counsel of the LORD, that shall stand.

22 1)사람은 그 仁慈(인자)함으로 남에게 思慕(사모)함을 받느니라 가난한 者(자)는 거짓말하는 者(자)보다 나으니라
    1) 인자를 베푸는 것이 사람의 즐거움이니라

What a man desires is unfailing love; better to be poor than a liar.

The desire of a man is his kindness: and a poor man is better than a liar.

23 여호와를 敬畏(경외)하는 것은 사람으로 生命(생명)에 이르게 하는 것이라 敬畏(경외)하는 者(자)는 足(족)하게 지내고 災殃(재앙)을 만나지 아니하느니라

The fear of the LORD leads to life: Then one rests content, untouched by trouble.

The fear of the LORD tendeth to life: and he that hath it shall abide satisfied; he shall not be visited with evil.

24 게으른 者(자)는 그 손을 그릇에 넣고도 입으로 올리기를 괴로와하느니라

The sluggard buries his hand in the dish; he will not even bring it back to his mouth!

A slothful man hideth his hand in his bosom, and will not so much as bring it to his mouth again.

25 倨慢(거만)한 者(자)를 때리라 그리하면 어리석은 者(자)도 警醒(경성)하리라 明哲(명철)한 者(자)를 譴責(견책)하라 그리하면 그가 知識(지식)을 얻으리라

Flog a mocker, and the simple will learn prudence; rebuke a discerning man, and he will gain knowledge.

Smite a scorner, and the simple will beware: and reprove one that hath understanding, and he will understand knowledge.

26 아비를 驅迫(구박)하고 어미를 쫓아 내는 者(자)는 부끄러움을 끼치며 凌辱(능욕)을 부르는 子息(자식)이니라

He who robs his father and drives out his mother is a son who brings shame and disgrace.

He that wasteth his father, and chaseth away his mother, is a son that causeth shame, and bringeth reproach.

27 내 아들아 知識(지식)의 말씀에서 떠나게 하는 敎訓(교훈)을 듣지 말찌니라

Stop listening to instruction, my son, and you will stray from the words of knowledge.

Cease, my son, to hear the instruction that causeth to err from the words of knowledge.

28 妄靈(망령)된 證人(증인)은 公義(공의)를 업신여기고 惡人(악인)의 입은 罪惡(죄악)을 삼키느니라

A corrupt witness mocks at justice, and the mouth of the wicked gulps down evil.

An ungodly witness scorneth judgment: and the mouth of the wicked devoureth iniquity.

29 審判(심판)은 倨慢(거만)한 者(자)를 爲(위)하여 豫備(예비)된 것이요 채찍은 어리석은 者(자)의 등을 爲(위)하여 豫備(예비)된 것이니라

Penalties are prepared for mockers, and beatings for the backs of fools.

Judgments are prepared for scorners, and stripes for the back of fools.
