1 믿음은 바라는 것들의 實狀(실상)이요 보지 못하는 것들의 證據(증거)니
Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.
2 先進(선진)들이 이로써 證據(증거)를 얻었느니라
This is what the ancients were commended for.
3 믿음으로 모든 世界(세계)가 하나님의 말씀으로 지어진 줄을 우리가 아나니 보이는 것은 나타난 것으로 말미암아 된 것이 아니니라
By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God's command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible.
4 믿음으로 아벨은 가인보다 더 나은 祭祀(제사)를 하나님께 드림으로 義(의)로운 者(자)라 하시는 證據(증거)를 얻었으니 하나님이 그 禮物(예물)에 對(대)하여 證據(증거)하심이라 저가 죽었으나 그 믿음으로써 오히려 말하느니라
By faith Abel offered God a better sacrifice than Cain did. By faith he was commended as a righteous man, when God spoke well of his offerings. And by faith he still speaks, even though he is dead.
5 믿음으로 에녹은 죽음을 보지 않고 옮기웠으니 하나님이 저를 옮기심으로 다시 보이지 아니하니라 저는 옮기우기 前(전)에 하나님을 기쁘시게 하는 者(자)라 하는 證據(증거)를 받았느니라
By faith Enoch was taken from this life, so that he did not experience death; he could not be found, because God had taken him away. For before he was taken, he was commended as one who pleased God.
6 믿음이 없이는 기쁘시게 못하나니 하나님께 나아가는 者(자)는 반드시 그가 계신 것과 또한 그가 自己(자기)를 찾는 者(자)들에게 賞(상) 주시는 이심을 믿어야 할찌니라
And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.
7 믿음으로 노아는 아직 보지 못하는 일에 警告(경고)하심을 받아 敬畏(경외)함으로 方舟(방주)를 豫備(예비)하여 그 집을 救援(구원)하였으니 이로 말미암아 世上(세상)을 定罪(정죄)하고 믿음을 좇는 義(의)의 後嗣(후사)가 되었느니라
By faith Noah, when warned about things not yet seen, in holy fear built an ark to save his family. By his faith he condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness that comes by faith.
8 믿음으로 아브라함은 부르심을 받았을 때에 順從(순종)하여 將來(장래) 基業(기업)으로 받을 땅에 나갈새 갈 바를 알지 못하고 나갔으며
By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance, obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going.
9 믿음으로 저가 外邦(외방)에 있는 것같이 約束(약속)하신 땅에 寓居(우거)하여 同一(동일)한 約束(약속)을 遺業(유업)으로 함께 받은 이삭과 야곱으로 더불어 帳幕(장막)에 居(거)하였으니
By faith he made his home in the promised land like a stranger in a foreign country; he lived in tents, as did Isaac and Jacob, who were heirs with him of the same promise.
10 이는 하나님의 經營(경영)하시고 지으실 터가 있는 城(성)을 바랐음이니라
For he was looking forward to the city with foundations, whose architect and builder is God.
11 믿음으로 사라 自身(자신)도 나이 늙어 斷産(단산)하였으나 孕胎(잉태)하는 힘을 얻었으니 이는 約束(약속)하신 이를 미쁘신 줄 앎이라
By faith Abraham, even though he was past age--and Sarah herself was barren--was enabled to become a father because he considered him faithful who had made the promise.
12 이러므로 죽은 者(자)와 彷佛(방불)한 한 사람으로 말미암아 하늘許多(허다)한 별과 또 海邊(해변)의 無數(무수)한 모래와 같이 많이 生育(생육)하였느니라
And so from this one man, and he as good as dead, came descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as countless as the sand on the seashore.
13 ● 이 사람들은 다 믿음을 따라 죽었으며 約束(약속)을 받지 못하였으되 그것들을 멀리서 보고 歡迎(환영)하며 또 땅에서는 外國人(외국인)과 나그네로라 證據(증거)하였으니
All these people were still living by faith when they died. They did not receive the things promised; they only saw them and welcomed them from a distance. And they admitted that they were aliens and strangers on earth.
14 이같이 말하는 者(자)들은 本鄕(본향) 찾는 것을 나타냄이라
People who say such things show that they are looking for a country of their own.
15 저희가 나온 바 本鄕(본향)을 생각하였더면 돌아갈 機會(기회)가 있었으려니와
If they had been thinking of the country they had left, they would have had opportunity to return.
16 저희가 이제는 더 나은 本鄕(본향)을 思慕(사모)하니 곧 하늘에 있는 것이라 그러므로 하나님이 저희 하나님이라 일컬음 받으심을 부끄러워 아니하시고 저희를 爲(위)하여 城(성)을 豫備(예비)하셨느니라
Instead, they were longing for a better country--a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared a city for them.
17 아브라함은 試驗(시험)을 받을 때에 믿음으로 이삭을 드렸으니 저는 約束(약속)을 받은 者(자)로되 그 獨生子(독생자)를 드렸느니라
By faith Abraham, when God tested him, offered Isaac as a sacrifice. He who had received the promises was about to sacrifice his one and only son,
18 1)저에게 이미 말씀하시기를 네 2)子孫(자손)이라 稱(칭)할 者(자)는 이삭으로 말미암으리라 하셨으니
    1) 혹 저에게 대하여  2) 헬, 씨
even though God had said to him, "It is through Isaac that your offspring will be reckoned."
19 저가 하나님이 能(능)히 죽은 者(자) 가운데서 다시 살리실 줄로 생각한 지라 譬喩(비유)컨대 죽은 者(자) 가운데서 도로 받은 것이니라
Abraham reasoned that God could raise the dead, and figuratively speaking, he did receive Isaac back from death.
20 믿음으로 이삭은 將次(장차) 오는 일에 對(대)하여 야곱과 에서에게 祝福(축복)하였으며
By faith Isaac blessed Jacob and Esau in regard to their future.
21 믿음으로 야곱은 죽을 때에 요셉의 各(각) 아들에게 祝福(축복)하고 그 지팡이 머리에 依支(의지)하여 敬拜(경배)하였으며
By faith Jacob, when he was dying, blessed each of Joseph's sons, and worshiped as he leaned on the top of his staff.
22 믿음으로 요셉은 臨終時(임종시)에 이스라엘 子孫(자손)들의 떠날 것을 말하고 또 自己(자기) 骸骨(해골)을 爲(위)하여 命(명)하였으며
By faith Joseph, when his end was near, spoke about the exodus of the Israelites from Egypt and gave instructions about his bones.
23 믿음으로 모세가 났을 때에 그 父母(부모)가 아름다운 아이임을 보고 석 달 동안 숨겨 임금의 命令(명령)을 무서워 아니하였으며
By faith Moses' parents hid him for three months after he was born, because they saw he was no ordinary child, and they were not afraid of the king's edict.
24 믿음으로 모세는 長成(장성)하여 바로의 公主(공주)의 아들이라 稱(칭)함을 拒絶(거절)하고
By faith Moses, when he had grown up, refused to be known as the son of Pharaoh's daughter.
25 도리어 하나님의 百姓(백성)과 함께 苦難(고난)받기를 暫時(잠시) 罪惡(죄악)의 樂(낙)을 누리는 것보다 더 좋아하고
He chose to be mistreated along with the people of God rather than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a short time.
26 그리스도를 爲(위)하여 받는 凌辱(능욕)을 애굽의 모든 寶貨(보화)보다 더 큰 財物(재물)로 여겼으니 이는 賞(상) 주심을 바라봄이라
He regarded disgrace for the sake of Christ as of greater value than the treasures of Egypt, because he was looking ahead to his reward.
27 믿음으로 애굽을 떠나 임금의 怒(노)함을 무서워 아니하고 곧 보이지 아니하는 者(자)를 보는 것같이 하여 참았으며
By faith he left Egypt, not fearing the king's anger; he persevered because he saw him who is invisible.
28 믿음으로 逾越節(유월절)과 피 뿌리는 禮(예)를 定(정)하였으니 이는 長子(장자)를 滅(멸)하는 者(자)로 저희를 건드리지 않게 하려 한 것이며
By faith he kept the Passover and the sprinkling of blood, so that the destroyer of the firstborn would not touch the firstborn of Israel.
29 믿음으로 저희가 紅海(홍해)를 陸地(육지)같이 건넜으나 애굽 사람들은 이것을 試驗(시험)하다가 빠져 죽었으며
By faith the people passed through the Red Sea as on dry land; but when the Egyptians tried to do so, they were drowned.
30 믿음으로 七日(칠일) 동안 여리고를 두루 다니매 城(성)이 무너졌으며
By faith the walls of Jericho fell, after the people had marched around them for seven days.
31 믿음으로 妓生(기생) 라합은 偵探軍(정탐군)을 平安(평안)히 迎接(영접)하였으므로 順從(순종)치 아니한 者(자)와 함께 滅亡(멸망)치 아니하였도다
By faith the prostitute Rahab, because she welcomed the spies, was not killed with those who were disobedient.
32 내가 무슨 말을 더 하리요 기드온, 바락, 삼손, 입다와 다윗과 사무엘과 및 先知者(선지자)들의 일을 말하려면 내게 時間(시간)이 不足(부족)하리로다
And what more shall I say? I do not have time to tell about Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, David, Samuel and the prophets,
33 저희가 믿음으로 나라들을 이기기도 하며 義(의)를 行(행)하기도 하며 約束(약속)을 받기도 하며 獅子(사자)들의 입을 막기도 하며
who through faith conquered kingdoms, administered justice, and gained what was promised; who shut the mouths of lions,
34 不義(불의) 勢力(세력)을 滅(멸)하기도 하며 칼날을 避(피)하기도 하며 軟弱(연약)한 가운데서 强(강)하게 되기도 하며 戰爭(전쟁)에 勇猛(용맹)되어 異邦(이방) 사람들의 陣(진)을 물리치기도 하며
quenched the fury of the flames, and escaped the edge of the sword; whose weakness was turned to strength; and who became powerful in battle and routed foreign armies.
35 女子(여자)들은 自己(자기)의 죽은 者(자)를 復活(부활)로 받기도 하며 또 어떤 이들은 더 좋은 復活(부활)을 얻고자 하여 惡刑(악형)을 받되 苟且(구차)히 免(면)하지 아니하였으며
Women received back their dead, raised to life again. Others were tortured and refused to be released, so that they might gain a better resurrection.
36 또 어떤 이들은 戱弄(희롱)과 채찍질 뿐 아니라 結縛(결박)과 獄(옥)에 갇히는 試驗(시험)도 받았으며
Some faced jeers and flogging, while still others were chained and put in prison.
37 돌로 치는 것과 톱으로 켜는 것과 試驗(시험)과 칼에 죽는 것을 當(당)하고 羊(양)과 염소의 가죽을 입고 流離(유리)하여 窮乏(궁핍)과 患難(환난)과 虐待(학대)를 받았으니
They were stoned; they were sawed in two; they were put to death by the sword. They went about in sheepskins and goatskins, destitute, persecuted and mistreated--
38 이런 사람은 世上(세상)이 堪當(감당)치 못하도다 저희가 曠野(광야)와 山中(산중)과 巖穴(암혈)土窟(토굴)流離(유리)하였느니라
the world was not worthy of them. They wandered in deserts and mountains, and in caves and holes in the ground.
39 이 사람들이 다 믿음으로 말미암아 證據(증거)를 받았으나 約束(약속)을 받지 못하였으니
These were all commended for their faith, yet none of them received what had been promised.
40 이는 하나님이 우리를 爲(위)하여 더 좋은 것을 豫備(예비)하셨은즉 우리가 아니면 저희로 穩全(온전)함을 이루지 못하게 하려 하심이니라
God had planned something better for us so that only together with us would they be made perfect.
